great concept !

what's for dinner?

shrimp scampi!

check out this little recipe that i am gonna use:
  • 1 1/2 pound jumbo shrimp, shelled and deveined
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1/4 cup dry white white wine
  • 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves
  • 1/4 teaspoon grated lemon zest

Directions

Put the shrimp on a large pie pan or plate and pat them completely dry with a paper towel. Arrange the shrimp so they lay flat and are evenly spaced.
Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper. Add the butter to the skillet. When the foaming subsides, raise the heat to high, and invert the plate of shrimp over the pan so the shrimp fall into the pan all at once. Cook the shrimp, without moving them, for 1 minute. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Turn the shrimp over and cook for 2 minutes more. Transfer the shrimp to a bowl.
Return the skillet to the heat and pour in the vermouth and lemon juice. Boil the liquid until slightly thickened, about 30 seconds. Scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon. Stir the zest and parsley into the sauce. Pour the sauce over the shrimp, season with salt and pepper to taste and toss to combine.
Divide the shrimp among 4 plates or arrange on a platter and serve.

bigger oysters

i love oysters and espcially like them when they are big and meaty.
the small ones can be kinda gross... so if you like your oysters like i do, you may just find this litte article i found whilst reading one of sid's magazines:the economist
(shocker ! i know, can you believe it?)
anyway,  apparently  they are engineering these super duper oysters
check this out:
from the economist

"A new breed of oyster may encourage aquaculture
MUCH of the bounty of the ocean is, these days, far less plentiful than it used to be. Scarcity has made oysters expensive, turning this unattractive mollusc into a delicacy for the rich. That could change if researchers find a way to breed a faster growing and larger oyster. As many gardeners and farmers know, crossbreeding two wimpy specimens sometimes produces strong offspring—an effect known as hybrid vigour. Hybrid vigour is common in plants and is found in some animals—though, some speculate, it may be lacking in European royalty"....click here to read all about it------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
speaking of oysters, do you think that oysters are really an aphrodisiac? they say no

geisha

so yesterday i was watching oprah (yes, i watch oprah! ha) and she had lisa ling on doing a special on geishas.
wowza, talk about some interesting stuff.

and unless your some sort of japanese culture guru, i would suppose most of ya'll don't know much about this?
"The art, mystery and beauty of the Geisha culture is spellbinding and the sacrifice and discipline involved in a Geisha’s pursuit and perfection of art is awe-inspiring. It is a great pity that the ancient practices of the Geisha are undermined by the Western perception that Geisha are merely prostitutes. The most directtranslation of the wordGeisha, which was coined in 1688, is “artist” or “performing artist” – (gei) meaning “art” and (sha) meaning “person” or “doer”. By definition, a Geisha is art personified. Her purpose is to entertain. Geisha have their roots in the 11th century and are the successors of women who entertained warriors through the art of dance. Geisha are “professional hostesses who entertain their guests with their impeccable talents and sophisticated charm”. From a young age a would be Geisha is trained in the ancient art of Japanese dance, song, instrument playing (shamisen), flower arranging, kimono wearing, calligraphy, and conversation as well as the etiquette associated with the serving of alcohol and tea. It takes years of practice to master the fore mentioned skills. Even after a woman has achieved the status of Geisha, she is expected to continue lessons to progress her skills and ensure that her art does not fall stagnant. "  more
